Electrical Station MATH 4.2: Electrical Systems in Health

Dealing with Ratios and Proportions

Ratio bigratio small

  1. Module Goal:  To define ratios and proportions and solve problems using them as tools
  2. Materials Required: Computer with fast Internet connectivity
  3. Applied Objectives: In completing this unit, you will -
      • Define a ratio
      • Write a ratio in 3 different ways
      • Turn medication and IV concentrations into dosage ratios
      • Define a proportion
      • Identify a true proportion
      • Use the X rule to solve for an unknown value in a proportion
      • Calculate medication dosages by setting up and solving a proportion
  4. Pre-requisite knowledge: 6th-grade reading level and arithmetic skills.
  5. Applied Terminology: All terminology for this module is covered in the PowerPoint presentation
  6. Evaluation: Projects submitted in this module will be evaluated by rubrics, quizzes, or completion. A rubric is a table that shows you what you are being grade on. A rubric states exactly what is expected of you at different levels. CLICK HERE to find the rubric for assignments in this module.

Reflect on What You Know

In this unit, you learned how to perform hands-only CPR and full CPR, and you saw that in full CPR, we use a ratio of “breaths-to-compressions.” Discuss your responses to the following questions with your coach or other learners.

    1. What do you think a ratio is, based on what you already know?
    2. What do you think a proportion is, based on what you already know? What does the word “proportionate” mean to you?
    3. Can you think of any situations in your daily life where ratios or proportions come into play?

Introduction to Ratios and Proportions

BEFORE YOU START – Print the following worksheets. You will fill out the Lesson Answer Sheet as you go through the presentation and are asked to complete practice problems. The next two worksheets are to be completed for the “Review and Practice” at the end of the PowerPoint:

Now open the Electrical Station Math 4.2 PowerPoint presentation, Ratios and Proportions, from the link below. Examine and reflect on the information on each slide and complete the activities. Turn in your handouts to your coach when you are done.
