WHO WE SERVE | FUNDING
THE POPULATION WE SERVE
Our Adult
Education Program offers the only comprehensive adult basic education
services in Montezuma and Dolores counties. To best serve this
extreme Four Corners area, we provide onsite classes for adult residents
of Cortez, Dolores, Mancos, and Dove creek. We also provide one-to-one
tutoring and distance education for rural areas in the
surrounding regions, including the Navajo Reservation.
The
Adult Education Program continually receives referrals for educational
services from Montezuma/
Dolores Job Service, The Training Advantage, Pinon Project, Head Start,
Social Services, four local school districts, Montezuma County Court/Parole
Office, Colorado Rehabilitation Services, and other agencies and individuals
in the area.
FUNDING AND
COLLABORATION
Funding for the Adult Education Program has comesfrom the Colorado Department of Education/Center for At-Risk Education and state
reimbursements for serving youth who drop out of school (PPOR). Additional
funding has been received through a YCPI ( Youth Crime Prevention
and Intervention) state
grant for extended ABE instructional hours and parenting classes. This grant
is a collaborative project with the Montezuma County Pinon Project. In addition,
the SWBOCS Adult Education Program has been a collaborative partner in a multi-state
STAR SCHOOLS grant (Wyoming, Utah, Colorado, and Montana). Through Star Schools
funding, the program has also initiated the Integrate Learning Project
and its focus on project-based learning.
In
2004, we moved into our new center, built with donations from The
Montezuma
County Housing authority, a Community Development Block
grant, and other supporting foundations, for a total of over
$700,000.
Our fiscal
agent for distribution of funds has been the Southwest Board of Cooperative
Services (SWBOCS).
In 1996, the Adult Education Program director worked closely with the
former State Adult Education Director, Dian Bates, to form an
educational telecommunications collaborative composed of over fifty
regional partners representing a variety of interests and services,
the Southwest Educational Telecommunications Consortium (SWETEC). SWETEC members have supported many grant-writing efforts by
the Adult Education Program, representing the area's investment in
distance education and adult learning.
We
work hand-in-hand with The
Four Corners Virtual Resource Center, which we co-sponsor with CDE,
to offer technical training, professional development, and curriculum
for distance education instructional delivery.
