WORKPLACE/LIFE SKILLS LITERACY AND DISTANCE EDUCATION
Adults learn through association with what they know and want. Most
adults who come to us have work-related goals. We encourage learning
academic skills within the context of workplace situations and
vocabulary. Through partnerships with the College of Eastern Utah
and San Juan Basin Technical College, we currently offer training
and certification in medical coding, medical lab assistant, and
business and office fundamentals. Future training programs will
include dental assistant, veterinary assistant, radiology
technician, and uranium mining.
FAMILY
LITERACY
Our learners are family members: parents, siblings, offspring,
relatives. As we work with parents we influence their families. As
we work with children and parents, they both learn more about
building healthy relationships and confident selves.
Our
Even Start partnership with Pinon Project develops
healthy family habits through hands-on, interactive instruction.
Classes meet regularly throughout our project area and focus on
parent-child time (PACT), child development, parent support time,
and adult education.
COMPUTER TRAINING
We
offer computer training that covers basic computer literacy and
introductions to Microsoft Office applications. All of our computer
training includes the completion of projects that emphasize work
related skills.
PROJECT-BASED/THEMATIC LEARNING
We
offer onsite instruction to adults (17 and over) in adult basic
skills education, English as a second language, pre-GED and GED
preparation. Our instructors encourage students to relate academic
content to real life needs through completion of hands-on projects.
On-site instruction is delivered to small groups or by individual
tutoring. The instructors assist students in developing an
individualized learning plan which includes a portfolio of
demonstrated competencies.
TECHNOLOGY GRANTS IN PROGRESS
Rural Utilities Services (RUS) - We were awarded a significant Distance Education and
Telemedicine grant (Rural Utilities Service grant of $430,300) from
the Department of Agriculture in 2006 to implement a variety of
distance education opportunities among our partners in the region.
This rural development grant (RUS) furnishes the equipment needed to
connect us with schools and hospitals in Colorado and other parts of
the Southwest, including the Navajo Reservation.
Independent Learning Project
Our Independent Learning Project has been enrolling students since
spring of 2007. ILP was funded through the Colorado Workforce
Development Office of the Colorado Department of Labor. This
innovative project has parolees and probationers in the Four Corners
region use handheld computers to practice skills eventually required
for passing the GED.
4Corners Online Project
Through a grant awarded by the Colorado Workforce Development
Office, we are participating in an online GED preparation project
that includes four adult education programs in our southwest region.
The curriculum and accountability tools used in this project were
developed by McGraw Hill Publishing Company.
